A recent survey for Mind reported that just 11% of people would speak to their manager about their mental health (Pulse Survey April 2020).

The GMC reports 85% and this is recognised as largely due to their long-term partnership with Petros.

In 2015 the General Medical Council (GMC) Invitation to Tender for Emotional Resilience training was won by Petros, with the remit to provide an Emotional Resilience learning programme covering personal resilience, wellbeing and health. Taking into account and reflected the GMC’s internal policies, guides and statutory responsibilities, this work continues to date. The GMC’s requirements were to develop training, support and other interventions for both managers and frontline staff.

Petros workshops for frontline staff include:

  • Mental health awareness – Interacting with those who have mental health challenges (either colleagues or work associates) and how to recognise/understand how conditions can impact behaviour.
  • Managing challenging interactions (face to face and by telephone).
  • Building resilience
  • Team and individual Decompression Sessions for those in the front line of potential trauma

Petros workshops for managers include:

MindHealth for Managers: how to manage and support staff to maintain good psychological health at work and how to support those with pre-existing mental health conditions. This is done through the introduction of an empirically tested resilience model and a ‘lived-experience’ case study. Due to its exceptional impact instilling confidence in Managers to enable their staff to feel settled and safe, the programme has been adopted as a mandatory training module within the GMC.

Supporting Staff Managing Challenging Interactions: empowering managers to take immediate action to support their frontline staff in response to acute exposure to trauma.

A ‘train the trainer’ programme has also been rolled out for key managers. Petros has also produced additional written guidance for GMC staff to manage bereavement, suicidal thoughts and how to cope with working from home due to COVID-19. Jo Clarke was heavily involved in the development of the overall GMC wellbeing strategy, signposting resources, advising managers and guiding implementation.

The training has continued, online and without pause, throughout COVID-19.
